Eisai Pharma to set up a Global Capability Centre at Visakhapatnam to lead digital healthcare initiatives.

The news was announced during a strategic visit by Eisai’s Global CIO to GITAM University.

The centre will be supported with academic partnerships, technology assistance, and government assistance.

Key Background :

Eisai Pharma is Japan-based and recognized worldwide for its emphasis on neuroscience and oncology. It conducts drug research, development, and marketing. Greater emphasis on digital innovation, Eisai is constructing Global Capability Centres with a view to improving research agility, data handling, and service provision.

India has emerged as the destination of choice for such facilities, with immense talent pool, cost-effectiveness, and robust digital network. The Visakhapatnam option, commonly referred to as the “City of Destiny,” by Eisai is a testament to the escalating image of the city in pharma and IT. Being where the VSEZ and Pharma City are, gives the right environment for development.

This GITAM-Eisai collaboration is a milestone academia-industry collaboration. The focus of GITAM on multidisciplinary learning and innovation in fields of biotechnology, machine learning, and healthcare analytics aligns with the purpose of Eisai. The talks also suggested research collaboration, students’ internship, and co-development of digital solutions.

During the visit, the leadership of Eisai engaged with academic leaders and laboratory directors to unite on long-term visions. The Vice-Chancellor of the university and top-ranking deans showed willingness to translate academic excellence into practical application. The exchange focused on building a pipeline of talented professionals ready for the medicine of tomorrow.

Government patronage has been a major factor in bringing Eisai to Andhra Pradesh. Policy support of the state, ease of doing business, and industry-specific infrastructure such as Pharma City and upcoming digital parks have rendered Visakhapatnam a place of choice for GCC. The strong base in engineering education in the area is only an added draw.

As the global pharmaceutical sector increasingly turns to digital models, Eisai’s GCC is poised to serve as a blueprint for integrating healthcare innovation with digital capability. The move also reflects India’s broader ambition to be a global hub for digital health, and is likely to attract similar investments to the region.
